Food Review: Student Biryani

<>When a plate of biryani is so enticing that a 30 minute drive from our place to the restaurant at a cold night is a small sacrifice.  Was Student Biryani all worth it?<?>

I have heard of Student Biryani when we were still living in Abu Dhabi.  We never visited it for its biryani.  Maybe because there were more shops that offer the same item with more good reviews and highly recommended by Indian colleagues.

Anyway, since we both were craving for a biryani meal.  We decided to visit the place.  I’ve checked their menu and there was a fried chicken.  I was hoping it would be broasted.  I have been searching for a broasted chicken here in Sydney but no luck so far.

The restaurant is located in Auburn and it was along a busy street so parking is tricky.  Since we parked a bit far, the walk was nostalgic.  Grocery stores selling items I missed from Abu Dhabi are everywhere.  The ambiance was exactly what we had back then.  The restaurant looks small from the street but once you are inside, it is open and big.  Plenty of tables and chairs.  We arrived a bit earlier for dinner time so we got a good seat.

The place was buzzing with customers and the staff were quick.  They gave us our menu and after a minute somebody was already by our table to take our orders.  Unfortunately, we were not prepared on how ordering was done in the restaurant.  So we have to go through the menu first, by the time we were ready to order the staff was already on to another table.  It took some time before we were noticed again.  So note to those who are planning to visit the place, be quick in ordering.

We ordered, chicken biryani rice meal, mutton/goat biryani rice meal and 2 pc fried chicken meal.  We didn’t wait long for the food to be served except for the fried chicken.  Serving size is okay.  I was hoping for a more generous one.  The chicken biryani was okay and too spicy.  But the raita was just right to cut through it.  I’m not sure what kind of biryani was served but there was too much sauce and the chicken pieces were small and more bones than meat.  My husband’s goat biryani was okay (according to him).  Nothing special.  The fried chicken was almost good enough but a bit dry.  I just realized later while eating it that its inner meat is cold.  It was probably reheated but not done well.

Total cost of the meal was A$35.  So going back to my initial question if it was worth the drive?  It’s sadly a no.
